Late 2006 I decided it was
time to convert the Samson 2-channel subwoofer into an active system,
rather than being driven by my home theatre amplifier.
The benefits of this are a
huge increase in power (350W), the ability to fine tune the lowpass
crossover frequency and EQ to match the room acoustics, and the
ability to use Samson for stereo as well as home-theatre playback.
The amplifier I chose was the
Yamaha P3500S professional
power amplifier. 350W per channel into 8ohms, with a 2nd order adjustable
lowpass filter (30-200Hz) , and thermal fan cooling allowing me
to stack other components on top.
My Marchand active crossover
used in Samson has been replaced by the Behringer
Ultragraph Pro FBQ1502 graphic equalizer. This will provide
the necessary gain and equalisation to suit the room and/or programme
material.
